Astigmatism – a problem with the eye

Astigmatism happens in the eyes when the shape is not spherical, but more like spoon on the back being longer on one side. This causes problems in focusing properly and the vision is not clear but blurred. Though the exact cause cannot be determined it is a genetic problem and it affects most people. The cornea is almost never perfect in its shape and the degree of astigmatism differs from one person to another. When the problem is mild the eye adjusts to focusing light on its own and no corrective measures are required. Along with astigmatism many have additional visual problems like long sight and short sight also.

People with astigmatism have blurred vision which can also be distorted regardless of whether they are looking at objects in the distance or reading a book at close range. Because of the strain on the eyes such people end up with headaches.

Anyone who shows signs of visual problems should be taken to a qualified ophthalmologist or an optometrist who will do a complete check up and find out what the problem is. As very young children can also have this problem and not be in a position to explain it properly, the optometrist will perform a test which is done by reflecting light on the retina and is called retinoscopy.
